Taking care of yourself seems like a “no-brainer,” but self-care is much more than being aware of your personal hygiene and doing something nice for yourself once in awhile. Self-care is recognizing and managing your emotions and using anchors to regulate your nervous system when you can. As you mature, your awareness of triggers and stress should improve and healthy people work to avoid situations that are unhealthy for them. This can mean that you curl up with a comfy blanket when you’re feeling down, but it should also mean that you meet regulation challenges head on, create boundaries to protect your nervous system, and begin to understand how to “protect” yourself in toxic situations.
